Songs of Love and Loss
Kowhai Singers 2nd concert of 2023 featured an eclectic mix of well-known modern / contemporary composers’ tunes under the title of “Songs of Love and Loss”. Guest musicians also accompanied the 24-strong choir.
Barbara Hamilton, highly acclaimed double bass player, Sheryl Clark, a well-known NZ pianist and Robert Nute, drummer, made up the trio of talented musicians.
The 1st half of the concert featured choral arrangements of I can’t give you anything but love, Blue Moon, Can’t help falling in love with you, How deep is your love, Love Divine, The place where lost things go (from Mary Poppins 2), My funny Valentine and Fly me to the moon.
After the interval, Ken Leech (conductor) joined 7 members of The Castorways, an Auckland-based vocal ensemble, and the 4 songs they performed superbly included When I fall in love, The Beatles' Ticket to Ride and Coldplay’s Fix you.
The choir then performed The greatest love of all, The sound of silence, Pokarekare Ana (arr. David Hamilton), Streets of London, Swinging with the Gershwins Medley, Windmills of your mind, You’ve got a friend, and concluded with You’ll never walk alone with The Castoways joining them in this rousing finale.Very enjoyable concert and well - supported by almost full houses at Leigh and Warkworth.
